The focus will be on supporting business owners and start-up ventures to grow.

A wide range of free events and learning sessions are taking place across Perthshire, covering aspects of growing your business, from employing staff and improving your eco-credentials.

The focus month gets under way on Tuesday, September 4th, when our always popular Eastern Perthshire Women’s Enterprise Network meeting takes place in Cargill’s Bistro, Blairgowrie. We're delighted to welcome Carolyn Currie, chief executive of Women’s Enterprise Scotland, as the guest speaker. Women’s Enterprise Scotland is a not-for-profit community interest company which works to create an entrepreneurial environment where women-led business can flourish.

Women’s Enterprise Network meetings will also take place in Highland Perthshire on Thursday, September 13th, and in Strathearn on Tuesday, September 18th.

The Strathearn meeting will take place in Cultybraggan on the outskirts of Comrie. Cultybraggan is the last remaining POW (prisoner of war) camp in Scotland and is run by the Comrie Development Trust as an events venue and a base for local businesses and organisations, while still preserving the history of the site for future generations.

Strathearn will also be the venue for a free learning session on creating visual content for marketing, social media and website with creative technology consultant Scott Russell at the community campus in Crieff on Wednesday, September 5th.

And Enterprising Rural Perthshire month will also see a training session for those interested in becoming a mentor and supporting fellow entrepreneurs to achieve their potential.

Fifty Shades of Green will look at ways in which you can make your business environmentally and accessibility friendly, highlighting issues such as waste and energy management, transport, biodiversity and purchasing decisions. This event takes place in award-winning eco-friendly five-star hostel Jessie Mac’s in Birnam in Highland Perthshire on Thursday, September 6th. And in Dunkeld on Thursday, September 20th, there will be a session introducing the logistics and legalities of employing staff.

There will also be a number of online sessions during Enterprising Rural Perthshire month as part of GrowBiz’s own efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Planning for Growth takes place on Thursday, September 6th, using Facebook for business on Tuesday, September 18th, how a mentor can help grow your business on Thursday, September 20th and systemising your business on Thursday, September 27th.

There will also be a session in east Perthshire on using software to grow your business on Wednesday, September 19th and the monthly Xchange networking event, which will take place in the Birnam House Hotel on Thursday, September 27th.

GrowBiz operations manager Merle Palmer is looking forward to a busy month.

She said: “This is the first time we have held a themed month of events across rural Perthshire and we’re delighted to be able to offer entrepreneurs at all stages of their business journey so many opportunities to learn more about growing and developing their ventures.

“Figures based on VAT-registered companies suggest that the rural economy in Scotland is worth almost £37 billion, but we believe the true value is actually much higher as up to 50 per cent of private sector enterprises in Scotland are micro-businesses and not VAT-registered.

“The potential for growth in rural areas is therefore significant and something we wanted to focus on.

“We hope that as many people as possible will be inspired to get involved with Enterprising Rural Perthshire month in September, taking part in lots of events and learning sessions, developing new skills and making new contacts.”
