Historic Environment Scotland Award for Burmieston Farm & Steading

GrowBiz clients Keesje Crawford-Avis and Oliver Crawford run Burmieston Farm & Steading near Perth, a beautifully renovated farm steading which offers accommodation and a location venue for events and workshops, and which has played host to some GrowBiz events in the recent past.

They are now the proud recipients of an Historic Environment Scotland award for Conservation and Climate Change as part of the RIAS/RIBA Architecture Awards.

On winning the award owner Keesje Crawford-Avis, said "The conservation elements included keeping the building very much as it was, with the same roof lines, putting back the ventilation ducts and using a stone milking parlour partition as part of the shower.

We re-used the slates and as many of the materials as we could both inside and outside. From a climate change perspective we considered the carbon footprint of all of the materials we used in the fabric and the interiors of the building, as well as how it will operate going forward. The insulation is made of sheep wool and recycled plastic, our lighting is LED and our shower heads are low flow.

We also took into consideration the changing climate so have rainwater recycling to flush the loos, and water butts from old whisky barrels to water the plants, creating a flow of outside and inside space with shade and or shelter from the rain. Much of the flooring is from the Olympics’ Copperbox stadium, or Marmoleum, and the majority of the furniture is beautifully upcycled by a local artisan Sarah Peterson. It really is all in the details!"

Many congratulations to Oliver and Keesje at Burmieston -  it really is an idyllic setting, and we're sure we will be back there soon!
